joe biden was blasting the romney tax plan with being out of touch with the middle class. >> the romney/ryan tax plan will raise taxes on middle-class families with a child, one or more children by an additional $2,000 a year. how -- all kidding aside, without the boos. stop all that malarkey. this is deadly ernest, man. this is deadly ernest. how they can justify -- how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years. how in lord's name can they justify it? >> the romney campaign picked up on that middle class being buried for the last four years during which president obama was in the white house while campaigning in iowa. paul ryan did not miss the opportunity to seize on biden's choice of words. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been, quote, buried. we agree. of course the middle class has been buried. they're being buried by regulations. they're being buried by taxes. they're being buried by borrowing. they're being buried by the obama administration's economic failures. >> the romney

they went after joe biden for his gaffe on saying the middle class has done poorly under the president, but i think, again, they're trying to do things in this tactical way that just hasn't worked for them so far and i think every day they're not having mitt romney out forcefully explaining what the president has done on the economy, is not a great day for them. now, he's in a better place than a lot of the pundits have suggested but i don't really think they have days to waste on things like this and the backlash against it was so strong. when drudge tees something up, even though he tilts right and even though a lot of people denigrate him, it gives the republicans an opportunity to dominate a news cycle. when they cry wolf with a 5-year-old video, it undermineds something so effective as a delivery mechanism over the years. >> i want to open this up to our panel here. karen, the debate, structure of the debate tonight, three segments on the economy, one segment on health care, one segment on the role of economy. no question on vintage youtube clips which is a total bummer to those o

>> actually, i think if you ask the voters, i think joe biden proved what's great about joe biden. he gets it. he's in touch. you know what? 80% of the voters agree. this economy has been bad. people have been buried. that's why they want to elect a president and a vice president who get it. who are in touch and will have policies that help the middle class, not millionaires. so i agree with the vice president. i think 88% of the voters would agree, too. >> jennifer: i just love joe biden. he's just -- he's just the greatest. he really is. thank you so much as ever for coming inside "the war room." >> thank you. >> jennifer: you political junkgies, a big tuesday night with big names in "the war room." there are leaders in the feminist movement and then there's gloria steinem. her take on the war on women and the election is next. and in the spirit of phrases conservation, there are political historians and then there's douglas brinkley. he'll take us on an historical tour of debates past. and later, a compelling documentary about a city near and dear to my heart detroit michigan. w
